Building Margin Owl

roadmapprofitabilityshopifyfounder-notes

I’m beginning the real work on Margin Owl. The goal is simple to say and hard to do well: help Shopify merchants find margin leaks and protect profit. This is the part I’ve always enjoyed most—blending data with clear decisions that move a business forward.

A bit about me, and why this

My background is in strategic pricing and promotions, with time in corporate finance and now software development. Across those roles I’ve seen how small details erode margin: discounts that stack in unexpected ways, offers that lift sales but cut too deep, and busywork that hides the real picture. Margin Owl is my way to bring those lessons into a focused product.

Why Shopify

Shopify is where the merchants are. The app ecosystem lets me build close to real stores, ship improvements fast, and use patterns that keep themes and checkout safe. It’s the right place to learn quickly with real feedback.

What Margin Owl will help with

This isn’t a feature list—it’s the shape of the product I’m aiming for.

  • Surface margin leaks across the catalog and promotions
  • Show the likely impact of discounts and fees so decisions are grounded
  • Add simple guardrails before offers go live
  • Keep promotions tied to a clear strategy rather than one‑off tactics
  • Reduce busywork so teams can spend more time on growth

How I’ll build

I’m starting small. The first steps are the basics: a clear picture of how discounts interact, a simple way to see risk to margin, and an easy setup. I’ll ship in small pieces, share updates as each part is ready, and adjust with feedback. Over time, Margin Owl will grow into a steady partner for planning and evaluating promotions, with you in control.

If you run a store and this resonates, I’d love to hear from you. Joining the waitlist helps me prioritize what to build next and lets me share progress as it happens.

Happy selling,
Brendan
